A thirteenth-century Italo-Byzantine triptych featuring the Virgin and Child, the Crucifixion, and Christ in Majesty, rendered in tempera and gold leaf.
This triptych is a representative example of the Italo-Byzantine style, which dominated Italian painting during the thirteenth century. Berlinghiero, an active painter in Lucca, follows the established iconographic traditions of the period, prioritising symbolic clarity over naturalistic representation. The central panel depicts the Hodegetria type, where the Virgin Mary gestures toward the Christ Child, who gazes upward at her. Their figures are defined by linear contours and a stylised approach to anatomy, common in the medieval period.
The side panels expand the narrative scope of the work. On the left, the Crucifixion is shown, accompanied by figures of saints below. The right panel features Christ in Majesty, enclosed within a mandorla, flanked by additional saints. The use of gold leaf across the background serves to flatten the pictorial space, creating a sense of divine, non-terrestrial light. This technique was standard for devotional objects, intended to draw the viewer into a state of contemplation.
Berlinghiero employs a palette dominated by earth tones, deep blues, and the reflective quality of gold. The figures are arranged with a focus on hierarchy rather than spatial depth, ensuring that the religious subjects remain the primary focus. The preservation of the original panel structure allows for an understanding of how such objects functioned within a domestic or ecclesiastical setting. This work provides insight into the transition between the rigid conventions of Byzantine art and the emerging humanism that would later define the Italian Renaissance. The precise application of tempera, combined with the careful gilding, demonstrates the technical skill required of painters in the Lucchese school. It remains a clear record of the aesthetic values held by patrons and artists in the early thirteenth century.
