A classic sacra conversazione by Lorenzo Lotto, featuring the Virgin and Child surrounded by four saints in a serene, devotional setting.
This work by Lorenzo Lotto, executed around 1506, depicts a sacred conversation, or sacra conversazione. The composition centres on the Virgin Mary, who holds the Christ Child. They are flanked by four saints: Jerome, Peter, Clare, and Francis. The figures are arranged in a compact, semi-circular formation, creating a sense of intimacy and psychological connection between the subjects.
Lotto employs a distinct approach to light and colour, characteristic of his early period. The figures are rendered with a sculptural quality, their forms defined by clear contours and a controlled palette. The Virgin wears a red bodice beneath a dark mantle, while the saints are dressed in their traditional habits and robes. Saint Jerome, on the left, is identifiable by his long beard and scholarly demeanour, while Saint Francis, on the right, wears the brown habit of his order.
In the background, a low wall separates the figures from a distant, open view. This setting includes a small, wooded area where two tiny figures are visible, adding a narrative element to the scene. The contrast between the monumental scale of the primary figures and the diminutive background details is a hallmark of Lotto's compositional style. The painting demonstrates the artist's ability to balance traditional religious iconography with a personal, emotive quality. The expressions of the saints, particularly the contemplative gaze of Saint Clare, suggest a moment of quiet devotion. This piece reflects the artistic climate of early sixteenth-century Italy, where painters sought to integrate human emotion into formal religious subjects. The work remains a fine example of Lotto's technical skill and his capacity for nuanced characterisation within the constraints of a conventional devotional format.
