This work depicts the Virgin Mary at the moment of the Annunciation, a subject frequently explored by Venetian masters of the sixteenth century. Titian, the leading figure of the Venetian school, employs his characteristic mastery of light and shadow to define the figure against a dark, atmospheric background. The composition focuses on the internal state of the subject, capturing a quiet, contemplative reaction to the divine message.

Mary is shown in profile, her head bowed and her hand placed gently against her chest. The colour palette relies on the contrast between the deep red of her undergarment and the cool, expansive blue of her mantle. These hues are rendered with the soft, painterly application of pigment that defines Titian's mature style. The drapery folds are handled with a sense of volume, creating a physical presence that anchors the figure within the frame. A portion of a wooden lectern is visible in the lower right, providing a subtle spatial indicator for the scene.

Originally part of the larger Averoldi Polyptych commissioned for the church of Santi Nazaro e Celso in Brescia, this panel demonstrates the artist's ability to imbue religious iconography with human emotion. The lighting is directional, catching the curve of the cheek and the texture of the fabric, while leaving the surrounding space in shadow. This technique directs the viewer's attention to the expression of the Virgin, avoiding unnecessary detail to maintain a focus on the narrative moment. The work remains a primary example of Titian's approach to religious subjects, where technical skill serves the emotional clarity of the composition.
