A refined nineteenth-century engraving by Raphael Morghen, depicting the Virgin of Sorrows with delicate tonal shading and precise line work.
This engraving by Raphael Morghen depicts the Virgin of Sorrows, a subject frequently explored in European religious art. Morghen, a master of the burin, was celebrated for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil paintings into the precise language of copperplate engraving. His technical skill allowed for the reproduction of subtle gradations in light and shadow, which are evident in the soft modelling of the subject's face and the folds of her veil.
The composition focuses on the figure of the Virgin, whose hands are clasped in a gesture of quiet contemplation. The artist employs a variety of line weights and cross-hatching techniques to define the texture of the fabric and the gentle contours of the face. The background remains simple, ensuring that the viewer's attention stays fixed on the expression of the subject. The inclusion of the coat of arms and the dedication at the base of the print indicates that this specific impression was produced for a royal patron, Maria Teresa, Princess of Sardinia and Duchess of Lucca.
Raphael Morghen was born in Naples and later settled in Florence, where he became a central figure in the printmaking community. His work was highly regarded during his lifetime for its accuracy and technical refinement. This print reflects the Neoclassical preference for clarity, balance, and emotional restraint. The engraving process requires immense patience and foresight, as the artist must plan the direction and density of every line to achieve the desired effect. This piece demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship associated with Morghen's studio, providing a clear example of early nineteenth-century reproductive printmaking.
