A depiction of St. Francis of Assisi by Jusepe de Ribera, rendered in the dramatic tenebrist style of the Spanish Baroque. The painting explores themes of faith and mortality.
Jusepe de Ribera, a leading painter and printmaker of the Spanish Baroque period, created this depiction of St. Francis of Assisi in a moment of spiritual ecstasy. Ribera, also known as Lo Spagnoletto ('the Little Spaniard'), spent most of his career in Naples, then part of the Spanish Empire, where he developed a distinctive style characterised by tenebrism and naturalism. His work often explores themes of martyrdom, religious devotion, and the human condition. In this painting, St. Francis is shown in his traditional brown habit, his face illuminated by a divine light. An angel hovers above him, presenting a glass orb, possibly symbolising divine knowledge or grace. A skull rests at the lower right, a memento mori reminding the viewer of mortality. The composition is dramatic, with strong contrasts between light and shadow, typical of the Baroque style. Ribera's skill in rendering textures, from the rough fabric of the saint's robe to the smooth skin of the angel, is evident. The painting invites contemplation on faith, mortality, and the possibility of divine intervention.
