A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga, depicting a scene from the Floating World Versions of the Seven Komachi series.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga belongs to the series Floating World Versions of the Seven Komachi. The work reinterprets the traditional Seven Komachi theme, which typically draws upon the life and poetry of the ninth-century poet Ono no Komachi, by placing the narrative within the contemporary context of the Yoshiwara pleasure district. Kiyonaga, a master of the Ukiyo-e genre, is known for his tall, graceful figures and his ability to integrate human subjects with architectural space.
The composition depicts a scene of interaction between figures separated by a wooden lattice screen. One woman kneels in the foreground, her posture and attire rendered with precise lines that define the folds of her kimono. A second figure leans toward the lattice, engaging with a person visible through the openings. The use of space is characteristic of Kiyonaga, who often employed architectural elements to create a sense of depth and structure within his prints. The muted colour palette, typical of the period, relies on subtle earth tones and soft pigments to convey the atmosphere of the interior setting.
Kiyonaga was active during the height of the Ukiyo-e movement. His work often focused on the daily lives of women in Edo, capturing their fashion and social interactions with a refined aesthetic. The inclusion of calligraphy at the top of the print provides a literary connection to the classical Komachi legends, bridging the gap between historical poetry and the popular culture of the eighteenth century. This print demonstrates the technical skill involved in multi-block printing, where each colour is applied using a separate carved woodblock to achieve the final image.
