A nineteenth-century wood engraving by Isaac Weissenbruch, depicting a fisherman contrasted against a Sunday church service, complete with moralising Dutch verse.
This wood engraving by Isaac Weissenbruch originates from the Dutch publication Prenten-Magazijn voor het Nederlandsche Volk. The work depicts a man fishing by a riverbank while a group of churchgoers gathers in the background. The scene captures a moment of social tension, contrasting the quiet activity of the fisherman with the religious observance of the Sunday congregation. The inclusion of a biblical citation from Hebrews 10:25 and the accompanying verse provides a moralising commentary on the scene, urging the fisherman to abandon his leisure and attend the service.
Weissenbruch employs a precise, linear technique characteristic of mid-nineteenth-century book illustration. The cross-hatching and varied line weights define the textures of the water, the grassy bank, and the architectural details of the church. The composition is structured to draw the eye from the foreground figure towards the distant church, creating a clear narrative separation between the secular and the sacred. The artist uses the medium to convey both the atmosphere of a rural Dutch setting and the didactic intent of the magazine. The print reflects the cultural values of the period, where visual media often served to reinforce social and religious norms through subtle irony or direct moral instruction. The presence of the artist's initials, IW, in the lower left corner confirms his authorship of this specific plate. This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of popular print culture and the moral discourse of the Netherlands during the mid-1800s, providing a record of both artistic style and societal expectations of the time.
