This etching by the Dutch naturalist and engraver Pieter Lyonet depicts a butterfly with precision. Lyonet was a polymath, known for his work in entomology and his ability to document the anatomy of insects through copperplate engraving. This specific study demonstrates his technical skill in capturing the texture of the wings and the delicate structure of the antennae.
The composition is centred, allowing the viewer to observe the symmetry of the specimen. Lyonet employed fine cross-hatching and line work to suggest the patterns on the wings, creating a sense of volume without the use of colour. The background remains plain, which is characteristic of scientific plates from the eighteenth century, where the objective was to provide a clear, undistracted view of the subject for study.
Lyonet is perhaps most recognised for his exhaustive anatomical research on the goat moth caterpillar, yet his smaller studies of butterflies and other insects reveal the same level of rigour.
