A detailed 1613 engraving by Raffaello Guidi depicting the Roman god Vulcan, based on the designs of Polidoro da Caravaggio.
This engraving by Raffaello Guidi depicts the Roman god Vulcan, the deity of fire and the forge. The composition is structured within an architectural niche, a common device in Renaissance and Mannerist printmaking to provide a sense of depth and spatial containment. Vulcan is shown in a contrapposto stance, holding a hammer in his right hand and a metal vessel in his left, referencing his role as the divine blacksmith.
Guidi employs precise cross-hatching and parallel line work to model the musculature of the figure and the texture of the stone niche. The lighting is controlled, creating a clear distinction between the foreground figure and the shadowed recess behind him. Above the arch, two putti hold a laurel wreath, adding a decorative element that balances the weight of the architectural frame.
The print is based on a design by Polidoro da Caravaggio, whose work on the Quirinal Hill in Rome provided the source material for this series. Guidi, an Italian engraver active in the early seventeenth century, was known for his technical skill in reproducing the works of earlier masters. The inscription at the base identifies the original painter and the publisher, Antonio Carenzano, who issued the print in Rome in 1613. This work reflects the period's interest in classical antiquity and the dissemination of Roman mural designs through the medium of print. The clarity of the line work and the adherence to classical proportions demonstrate the stylistic priorities of the era, where the graphic arts were utilised to preserve and circulate the visual language of the High Renaissance and Mannerist traditions.
