A woodblock print by Ohara Koson depicting a wagtail among reeds. The artwork showcases the artist's skill in capturing the beauty of nature with a refined and accessible style.
Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese artist associated with the Shin-hanga movement. He is known for his prints of birds and flowers (kachō-e). Koson initially trained in painting, but later shifted to woodblock printing, a medium that allowed for wider distribution of his work. His prints were popular both in Japan and abroad, particularly in the United States. He also worked under the names Ohara Hōson and Shōson. His work helped to revive interest in traditional Japanese art forms. This print depicts a wagtail standing among reeds. The bird is rendered with careful attention to detail, from its distinctive plumage to its slender legs. The composition is simple, with the bird and reeds set against a neutral background. The colour palette is restrained, with muted tones that create a sense of serenity. The print exemplifies Koson's skill in capturing the beauty of nature in a refined and accessible style.
