A vibrant oil painting by German Expressionist August Macke, 'Walking in the Park' depicts figures strolling through a park in bright, saturated colours.
August Macke (1887-1914) was a German Expressionist painter, one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). His work is characterised by its bright colours, simplified forms, and interest in depicting everyday life. Macke was killed in action during World War I at the age of 27. 'Walking in the Park' depicts a group of figures strolling through a park on a sunny day. The composition is divided into three distinct planes: the foreground, where a woman in an orange jacket and blue skirt holds a parasol; the middle ground, where two figures in blue stand; and the background, where trees and a building are visible. The painting is executed in a loose, painterly style, with visible brushstrokes and a limited colour palette. The colours are bright and saturated, creating a sense of light and atmosphere. The figures are simplified and stylised, and their faces are not visible. This adds to the sense of anonymity and detachment, which is a common theme in Expressionist art.
