A study of water lilies by Claude Monet, capturing the interplay of light and reflection on the surface of his garden pond at Giverny.
Claude Monet painted this study of water lilies during his later years at Giverny. By this period, the artist had moved away from traditional perspective, focusing instead on the surface of the pond and the interplay of light upon the water. The composition removes the horizon line, forcing the viewer to engage directly with the aquatic surface and the floating vegetation.
Monet used short, visible brushstrokes to capture the shifting qualities of light. The water lilies, rendered in soft whites and yellows, contrast with the cooler tones of the lily pads and the dark, reflective surface of the pond. The palette relies on deep greens, blues, and earthy tones, which provide a sense of depth without the use of conventional shading. This approach allows the colour itself to define the form of the plants and the movement of the water.
This work belongs to a larger series that occupied Monet for the final decades of his life. He constructed the water garden at his home specifically to provide a subject for his observations. The resulting paintings document his interest in the atmospheric conditions of the garden at different times of day. By focusing on a small section of the pond, Monet creates a sense of immersion. The lack of external context encourages a close examination of the texture of the paint and the application of colour. The work demonstrates his method of building form through layers of pigment, creating a surface that appears to shift as the light changes. It remains a primary example of his late style, where the distinction between the object and its reflection becomes increasingly blurred.
