Description
A fluid, abstract composition by Arshile Gorky, featuring rhythmic brushwork and a soft, luminous palette inspired by natural forms.
Arshile Gorky, born Vostanig Manoug Adoian, occupies a unique position in the history of twentieth-century American art. His work acts as a bridge between the European Surrealist tradition and the emerging Abstract Expressionist movement in New York. Waterfall, painted in 1943, demonstrates his transition toward a more fluid, organic abstraction that draws heavily from his memories of the Armenian countryside. The composition is defined by sweeping, calligraphic brushwork that suggests the movement of water over rock without resorting to literal representation. Gorky employs a palette of muted lilacs, soft greys, and pale yellows, punctuated by sharper accents of ochre and deep brown. The paint application is varied: in some areas, the pigment is applied with thin, translucent washes, while in others, it is built up into thick, gestural impasto. This technique creates a sense of rhythmic energy across the surface of the canvas. Unlike the rigid geometric structures of earlier modernism, Gorky’s approach here is biological and metamorphic. The forms appear to shift between the natural world and the internal landscape of the artist's psyche. By thinning his oil paint, he achieves a watercolour-like transparency that allows light to reflect from the ground of the canvas, adding a luminous quality to the work. This piece reflects his interest in the subconscious, a theme he explored through the lens of personal history and nature. The lack of a fixed horizon line or traditional perspective forces the viewer to engage with the painting as an immediate, physical experience of colour and form. It remains a primary example of his ability to synthesise European influences with a distinct, personal visual language.
