Description
A moody oil painting by David Cox depicting a shepherd and flock under a stormy Welsh sky. This work demonstrates the artist's expressive late style.
David Cox was a prominent figure of the Birmingham School and a significant contributor to British landscape painting. This work, Welsh Shepherds, dates from his later period when he frequently visited Betws-y-Coed in North Wales. During this time, Cox moved away from the precise detail of his earlier career. He adopted a broader, more expressive technique that captured the atmospheric conditions of the British countryside.
The composition is dominated by a heavy, turbulent sky. Dark grey and charcoal clouds fill the upper two-thirds of the canvas, suggesting an approaching storm. Cox uses loose brushstrokes to convey the movement of wind and mist. Below this expansive sky, a shepherd in a red cloak leads a flock of sheep across a rugged moor. A small dog accompanies them. The red of the cloak provides a small note of colour against the muted browns, greens, and ochres of the terrain.
Birds are scattered across the middle ground, their forms rendered with quick, dark marks. The horizon is low, which emphasises the scale of the weather. This approach to light and atmosphere predates the techniques later used by French Impressionists. Cox was interested in the immediate sensation of a place rather than a literal topographical record. The texture of the paint is visible on the surface, adding a physical quality to the depiction of the damp, windy environment.
