Description
A single arch of pale stone carries the road over a quiet stream in West Stones Dale, where grey barns and walled pastures climb to smooth, tawny hills.
Blocks in several shades of cream and grey form the parapet, and a dark tunnel of shadow fills the arch. Reeds and long grass crowd the banks, and rounded boulders stand in the shallows. Two barns sit high on the far slope, and a thick bank of cloud floats above the ridge. A strip of grey tarmac curves past the bridge on the right.
West Stones Dale lies in Swaledale, close to Muker, and the Pennine Way passes along the valley. Hikers and drivers who enjoy small stone bridges in big open country will see why this spot works so well. The bridge arch gives a strong centre to the quiet greens.
