Description
Whaligoe Steps in Highland Caithness descend between steep green sea cliffs towards deep blue water, with sunlit stone parapets and white foam around offshore rocks beneath a clear late summer sky.
Whaligoe Steps lead to a natural harbour south of Wick on the Caithness coast. The landing once sheltered fishing boats beneath two high sea cliffs. Women carried baskets of the catch up the long stairway, taking herring and other fish onward to market in the nearby town.
Pale stone stairs turn sharply around a thick parapet before dropping along the green left cliff. Below, further flights cross narrow ledges above dark blue water enclosed by a sheer shadowed headland. White foam circles a group of offshore rocks. Gold grass and warm rock highlights suggest late summer sunshine, with the open sea visible beyond the narrow harbour mouth.
