A woodblock print by Ohara Koson depicts a wheater in flight above bamboo. The composition balances naturalistic detail with simplified forms, characteristic of the kacho-e tradition.
Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese artist renowned for his woodblock prints of birds and flowers, a category known as kacho-e. Active during the late Meiji period into the Showa period, Koson initially trained in traditional Japanese painting but later transitioned to printmaking, working with publishers such as Watanabe Shozaburo. His work found popularity both in Japan and abroad, particularly in the United States. Koson's prints are characterised by their naturalistic depictions and subtle colour palettes. This print features a wheater in flight above a bamboo plant. The bird is captured mid-descent, its wings outstretched and feathers detailed with fine lines. The bamboo leaves are rendered in shades of green and gold, their forms simplified yet recognisable. The composition is balanced, with the bird positioned to the upper left and the bamboo filling the lower right, creating a sense of depth and movement within the flat picture plane. The print exemplifies Koson's skill in capturing the essence of nature through the medium of woodblock printing.
