A bronze sculpture by Charles M. Russell depicting a dynamic buffalo hunt on the American plains.
Charles M. Russell, often referred to as the Cowboy Artist, produced this bronze sculpture in 1905. It depicts a buffalo hunt, a subject that occupied much of his creative output during his career in Montana. The composition captures the kinetic energy of the chase, showing mounted hunters engaging with a herd of bison. Russell possessed an intimate knowledge of the American West, having lived among the cowboys and observed the customs of the Blackfeet people. His ability to render the anatomy of both horses and bison with such precision stems from his direct observation of these animals in their natural environment.
The bronze surface exhibits a dark, patinated finish that emphasises the muscular tension in the figures. The hunters are shown in mid-action, with one figure wielding a spear and another drawing a bow. The chaotic movement of the herd is conveyed through the varied angles of the animals, creating a sense of depth and urgency. Russell avoided static poses, preferring to freeze a moment of high drama. The base of the sculpture is textured to suggest the rugged terrain of the plains, grounding the figures in a specific geographical context. This work reflects the artist's interest in documenting a way of life that was rapidly changing at the turn of the twentieth century. His approach to sculpture is characterised by a tactile quality, where the marks of his modelling tools remain visible, adding a sense of immediacy to the finished bronze. By focusing on the physical struggle between man and beast, Russell provides a visceral account of the historical hunting practices of the Great Plains.
