A memorial stained glass window by Edward Burne-Jones, featuring figures of Faith, Courage, and Devotion in the Pre-Raphaelite style.
This stained glass window, designed by Edward Burne-Jones and executed by the Morris and Co. workshop, serves as a memorial to William Scott Luce. The composition features three distinct figures representing the virtues of Faith, Courage, and Devotion, arranged within a traditional Gothic-arched window frame. Above the central figures, an angel is depicted within the tracery, holding a scroll that bears the inscription: Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life. Burne-Jones utilised his characteristic elongated figure style, which draws inspiration from early Renaissance painting and medieval manuscript illumination. The figures are clad in armour and period-appropriate garments, reflecting the Pre-Raphaelite interest in historical narrative and chivalric themes. The leaded glass panels incorporate a diamond-shaped quarry pattern, which provides a neutral backdrop that allows the primary figures to occupy the visual centre. The colour palette is carefully balanced, utilising deep blues, muted reds, and earthy tones that harmonise with the natural light filtering through the glass. As a collaborative effort between Burne-Jones and the Morris and Co. firm, the window demonstrates the technical precision associated with late nineteenth-century British ecclesiastical art. The drapery of the garments and the posture of the figures exhibit the fluid, rhythmic lines typical of Burne-Jones's draughtsmanship. The work remains a representative example of the aesthetic principles championed by the Arts and Crafts movement, where the integration of design and craftsmanship was paramount. The window is located in the parish church of St. Mary, Malmesbury, where it continues to function within its original architectural context.
