A classic ink wash study of a magpie on a willow branch, attributed to the Southern Song master Fachang Muqi.
This work is attributed to the Chan Buddhist monk and painter Fachang Muqi, a figure associated with the Southern Song period. Muqi is recognised for his mastery of the ink wash technique, which prioritises economy of gesture and the suggestive power of negative space. In this composition, a magpie perches upon a slender, drooping willow branch. The bird is rendered with soft, layered ink washes that define its plumage, while the branch is suggested through a single, decisive stroke.
The background remains largely unadorned, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the subject and the surrounding void. This approach reflects the aesthetic principles of the period, where the artist sought to capture the essence of the natural world rather than its literal appearance. The ink tones vary from deep, saturated blacks to subtle, diluted greys, creating a sense of atmospheric depth despite the simplicity of the scene.
Muqi's influence extended far beyond his own time, particularly within the development of ink painting in Japan. His ability to evoke a specific mood through minimal means remains a defining characteristic of his output. The paper or silk support, aged over centuries, adds a tactile quality to the image, with the subtle variations in tone providing a quiet, contemplative experience. This print reproduces the original ink work, maintaining the balance between the dark, focused form of the bird and the expansive, empty space that characterises Muqi's approach to the natural world.
