Description
Windy Gyle on Northumberland's Scottish border rises among rounded Cheviot hills, with golden grass and steep green hollows giving the open uplands their broad, exposed character beneath a bright clouded sky.
The Pennine Way crosses the summit of Windy Gyle, a 619-metre hill on the England-Scotland boundary. Russell's Cairn marks its top, placing this rounded Cheviot height directly on the border and connecting it with a long-distance route through Northumberland's upland landscape.
Smooth grass-covered slopes fold around a deep central hollow. Tawny bands catch the light across the higher ridges, while darker green shadows emphasise gullies descending into the valley. Grey rocks and small purple-brown plants occupy the foreground. Dry grasses suggest late summer, with strong sunshine breaking beneath large cream clouds and broad areas of clear blue sky.
