Konstantin Korovin's 'Winter' captures a tranquil Russian winter scene with Impressionistic brushstrokes and a muted palette, evoking a sense of cold and stillness.
Konstantin Korovin (1861-1939) was a Russian Impressionist painter, known for his contributions to stage design and his atmospheric, often melancholic, paintings. He studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, and later at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. Korovin was associated with the Peredvizhniki movement, which sought to depict Russian life and culture realistically. However, he was also influenced by French Impressionism, which is evident in his loose brushwork and focus on capturing fleeting moments of light and colour. 'Winter' exemplifies Korovin's Impressionistic approach to capturing the Russian winter. The painting depicts a rural scene with a horse pulling a sled through the snow. The buildings are rendered with broad, visible brushstrokes, and the colour palette is dominated by whites, greys, and browns, creating a sense of cold and stillness. The bare trees and overcast sky further contribute to the wintry atmosphere. Korovin's ability to convey the mood and atmosphere of the Russian winter is a hallmark of his work, and this painting is a fine example of his skill.
