A classic Dutch winter scene by Jacob van Strij, capturing a frozen waterway near Drevel with figures and a rustic farmhouse under a pale sky.
Jacob van Strij, a painter from Dordrecht, produced this winter scene during a period when Dutch artists looked back to the seventeenth-century masters for inspiration. The composition follows the tradition of Aelbert Cuyp, whose influence is evident in the treatment of light and the atmospheric quality of the sky. The scene depicts a frozen waterway near Drevel, where the low winter sun casts long shadows across the ice and snow.
In the foreground, a small group of figures stands near a sled laden with barrels, accompanied by a dog. Their presence provides a sense of scale against the expansive, chilly environment. To the right, a rustic farmhouse with a thatched roof sits near the bank, its brickwork rendered with careful attention to texture. The bare, gnarled trees reach upward into a pale, expansive sky, their skeletal forms characteristic of the season. The palette is dominated by cool blues, greys, and whites, balanced by the warmer, earthy tones of the architecture and the figures' clothing.
Van Strij was known for his ability to capture the specific light conditions of the Dutch countryside. This work demonstrates his technical precision in oil paint, particularly in the way the light reflects off the frozen surface of the water. The painting avoids excessive drama, opting instead for a quiet, observational approach to the rural environment. It reflects the continuity of the Dutch tradition of winter imagery, where the focus remains on the daily life of the inhabitants and the transformation of the terrain by the cold. The balance between the human elements and the natural surroundings creates a stable, harmonious image that invites close inspection of the details, from the texture of the ice to the subtle variations in the winter clouds.
