This work is the seventh leaf from an album of seven paintings by the Qing Dynasty artist Yuan Yao. The composition presents a serene, wintry atmosphere, characteristic of the Shan Shui tradition. Yuan Yao, a member of a family of professional painters from Yangzhou, is recognised for his technical precision and his ability to render architectural structures within expansive natural settings.

The scene depicts a lakeside lodge nestled against a steep, snow-dusted cliff. The artist employs subtle ink washes to suggest the heavy, quiet presence of snow, while the architecture is rendered with fine, controlled lines. In the distance, the calm water reflects the muted tones of the sky, with small boats providing a sense of scale and human presence. The contrast between the solid, imposing rock formations and the delicate, linear details of the buildings demonstrates the artist's command over ink and brush.

Unlike the more expressive, calligraphic styles of earlier periods, this work reflects the refined, academic approach favoured during the mid-Qing period.
