A delicate 1859 watercolour by Andreas Schelfhout, depicting a quiet Dutch winter scene with figures and a horse on frozen water.
Andreas Schelfhout was a master of the Dutch winter scene, a genre with deep roots in the seventeenth-century tradition. This watercolour, dated 1859, captures the quiet atmosphere of a frozen waterway. The composition is framed by an ornate, embossed paper border, a common presentation for nineteenth-century sketches and studies.
Schelfhout demonstrates his technical control through the delicate application of wash, which suggests the cold, diffused light of a winter day. The scene features a small group of figures and a horse laden with goods, positioned on the ice near a snow-covered structure. The artist uses a restrained palette of cool blues, greys, and muted earth tones to convey the chill of the environment. His ability to render the texture of ice and the subtle shifts in atmospheric perspective is evident here, even within a small format.
Unlike the dramatic, high-contrast works of some of his contemporaries, Schelfhout focused on the observation of daily life within the Dutch climate. The inclusion of the horse and the small figures provides a sense of scale and human presence against the vast, frozen expanse. This work reflects the artist's interest in the interplay between natural light and the reflective surfaces of ice and snow. The precision of the brushwork, particularly in the depiction of the figures and the architectural elements, reveals the disciplined approach that made Schelfhout a respected figure in the Dutch art world of the mid-nineteenth century. This piece offers a glimpse into the preparatory or intimate nature of his practice, where the focus remains on the immediate visual experience of the season.
