Description
Withernsea in East Yorkshire has an unusual lighthouse within the town, its pale tower rising above former keepers’ cottages and gardens as a reminder of the coast’s shipping history.
Shipwrecks off Withernsea prompted the building of its lighthouse in the 1890s, when vessels could miss the lights at Spurn and Flamborough. In this East Yorkshire town, the two attached keepers’ cottages now contain museum displays about the tower and the local community.
The tall cream shaft fills the centre, narrowing towards a glazed lantern and delicate gallery. Dark chimneys cluster below it above a low cottage roof. Trees and rounded shrubs flank the house, and long shadows cross the foreground lawn. Pink-tinged clouds soften the blue sky, while the full leafy garden gives the landmark a sheltered summer setting away from the visible sea.
