A classical allegory by Dutch engraver Jacob Matham, depicting the mythological figures of Venus, Ceres, and Bacchus in a detailed engraving.
This engraving by Jacob Matham depicts a classical allegory based on the Roman proverb, Sine Cerere et Baccho friget Venus, which translates to 'without Ceres and Bacchus, Venus would freeze'. The composition features Venus at the centre, flanked by Ceres, the goddess of agriculture, and Bacchus, the god of wine. Cupid stands behind Venus, holding a bundle of wheat and a cluster of grapes, symbols of the sustenance required to fuel love and passion.
Matham, a prominent Dutch engraver and draughtsman, employs the stylistic conventions of Northern Mannerism. The figures exhibit elongated proportions and complex, twisting poses, characteristic of the period. The musculature is rendered with precise, rhythmic hatching, creating a sense of volume and depth within the figures. The background includes a tree and a distant, rocky outcrop, providing a setting that balances the foreground figures.
The print includes a Latin inscription at the base, which articulates the philosophical premise of the work. It suggests that love, represented by Venus, cannot survive without the material support of food and wine. This theme was popular in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, often appearing in both literature and visual arts as a commentary on the necessities of human existence.
As a master of the burin, Matham demonstrates technical control in his line work. The contrast between the light skin tones of the figures and the darker, shaded areas of the foliage and ground demonstrates the capabilities of the engraving medium. This piece serves as an example of the intellectual and artistic climate of the Netherlands during the transition from the late Renaissance to the Baroque era, where classical mythology was frequently adapted to convey moral or social observations.
