Description

A delicate ink and colour painting on silk by Nishikawa Sukenobu, depicting a woman and her attendant in traditional Japanese dress.

Nishikawa Sukenobu was a prominent figure in the Kyoto art scene during the Edo period. Unlike his contemporaries in Edo who focused on the pleasure districts, Sukenobu often depicted the daily lives and fashions of women in Kyoto. This work displays his characteristic approach to figure drawing, which prioritises fluid lines and a sense of gentle movement. The composition features two figures: a woman holding a folding fan and her attendant. Their postures suggest a quiet interaction, typical of the genre scenes Sukenobu produced for his numerous illustrated books and hanging scrolls. The figures are rendered with a focus on the patterns and folds of their kimono. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the red and green accents to draw the eye against the neutral silk background. The attendant is positioned slightly lower, creating a subtle hierarchy that informs the viewer of their respective roles. Sukenobu was known for his ability to capture the grace of his subjects through simplified forms and balanced spacing. His work influenced many later artists, including those who developed the more stylised prints of the mid-eighteenth century. This piece reflects the aesthetic preferences of the Kyoto merchant class, who favoured depictions of elegance and refined domesticity. The silk support provides a soft texture that complements the delicate brushwork. The artist's signature and seal are visible on the right, confirming the provenance of this scroll. By focusing on the interaction between the two women, Sukenobu provides a glimpse into the social customs of the era. The absence of a complex background ensures that the viewer remains focused on the figures and their attire, which serves as a record of historical textile design and fashion trends from the early eighteenth century.
