A detailed etching by Jean-François Millet depicting a woman engaged in the traditional rural task of carding wool.
Jean-François Millet, a central figure of the Barbizon School, focused his practice on the lives of rural labourers. This etching captures a woman engaged in the manual task of carding wool, a process essential to textile production in the nineteenth century. The composition places the subject in a dimly lit interior, where the focus remains entirely on her concentrated posture and the rhythmic motion of her hands.
Millet employs dense cross-hatching and varied line weights to define the texture of the wool, the fabric of the woman's apron, and the shadows of the room. The background remains largely obscured, which directs the viewer's attention to the physical exertion of the worker. Her head is bowed, and her expression is one of quiet absorption, reflecting the artist's interest in the dignity of manual labour.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who depicted the peasantry with sentimentality, Millet presents this figure with a grounded, unvarnished reality. The etching technique allows for a stark contrast between light and shadow, which gives the figure a sense of weight and presence. The spinning wheel visible behind her provides context for the domestic workspace, linking the act of carding to the broader cycle of home-based industry. This work demonstrates the artist's technical skill in printmaking, a medium he used to explore themes of toil and endurance. The print serves as a record of traditional methods that were already beginning to fade during the industrialisation of the period. By isolating the figure in this manner, Millet elevates a mundane, repetitive task into a subject worthy of serious artistic consideration.
