Penfield's illustration of a woman with a dog and luggage (c. 1893) evokes travel and mobility. The figure is dressed for a journey, and the small dog and bags suggest a fashionable departure, someone travelling for pleasure rather than necessity.
Travel imagery was common in Penfield's work, reflecting the expanding mobility of the American upper-middle class in the 1890s. Railroad networks had matured, resort towns in the Catskills, the Berkshires, and along the New England coast were thriving, and magazines like Harper's published regular travel features and advertised summer escapes. This illustration likely promoted a travel-themed or holiday issue.
The woman travelling with her own luggage and pet is another instance of Penfield's "New Woman" figures. She is managing her own journey rather than being escorted. The small dog is a smart visual detail: it tells the viewer that this is a leisure trip (nobody brings a lap dog on business), and it adds a note of personality and warmth to the composition. The woman is not merely a figure; she is a character with a life beyond the poster's frame.
Often called the father of the American poster, Penfield served as art director of Harper's Magazine from 1890 to 1901, producing over 100 cover designs during that period. His style drew on Japanese woodblock printing and the French affiche tradition: flat areas of colour, bold outlines, and minimal detail. He became one of the most recognised illustrators of the American Art Nouveau movement, and his wartime posters remain some of the most widely studied examples of early 20th-century graphic propaganda.
This fine art reproduction is printed on museum-grade stock, faithful to the original's bold colours and graphic simplicity.
