A detailed study by Jan de Bisschop depicting a woman in sixteenth-century attire, rendered in pen and brown ink with wash.
This drawing by the Dutch artist Jan de Bisschop captures a figure dressed in the elaborate fashion of the sixteenth century. De Bisschop, who was also a lawyer by profession, maintained a reputation for his skilled copies of classical sculpture and his own original drawings. His technique here relies on the application of brown ink and wash to define the volume of the garment and the posture of the subject.
The figure is depicted in profile, allowing for a clear view of the structured ruff, the puffed sleeves, and the heavy, pleated skirt. The artist uses wash to suggest the play of light across the fabric, creating depth without the need for complex shading. The silhouette is defined by the rigid lines of the period dress, which contrasts with the fluid application of the ink wash. The subject's pose, with one hand extended, suggests a moment of quiet observation or social interaction.
De Bisschop was known for his interest in the history of art and the study of historical costume. This work reflects his ability to translate the aesthetic of a previous century into his own contemporary medium. The paper shows signs of age, which complements the sepia tones of the ink. The composition is balanced, focusing entirely on the figure against a plain background, which directs the viewer's attention to the details of the historical attire. This piece offers a glimpse into the artistic practices of the seventeenth-century Netherlands, where the study of historical form was a common pursuit among draughtsmen.
