A candid 1920 pastel study by Suzanne Valadon, capturing a woman in a moment of quiet self-reflection before a mirror.
Suzanne Valadon, a former model for artists such as Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec, developed a distinct visual language that prioritised raw honesty over idealised beauty. In this 1920 work, she captures a private moment of self-reflection. The subject stands before a mirror, her posture relaxed yet candid. Valadon employs a firm, clear outline to define the figure, a technique that separates her work from the softer, more atmospheric styles of her contemporaries. The composition is balanced by the verticality of the mirror and the horizontal division of the room, creating a sense of domestic intimacy.
The colour palette is deliberate, using muted greens for the wall and warm, earthy tones for the floor and the fabric draped around the subject. The reflection in the mirror provides a secondary view of the subject, adding a layer of psychological depth to the scene. Valadon avoids the decorative flourishes common in the period, choosing instead to focus on the physical reality of the human form. Her application of pastel allows for a textured surface, where the marks of the artist remain visible, contributing to the immediacy of the image.
Valadon was the first woman admitted to the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, and her work often features unvarnished depictions of women. This piece is representative of her mature style, where the focus remains on the structural integrity of the body and the quiet observation of everyday life. By presenting the subject in a state of undress, she invites the viewer to consider the act of looking and the relationship between the self and the reflected image. The work remains a clear example of her ability to combine technical precision with a direct, unpretentious approach to her subjects.
