A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyohiro, featuring two women in patterned kimonos, one of whom holds a small cat.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyohiro depicts two figures in a domestic setting, a common subject within the Ukiyo-e tradition. The artist belonged to the Torii school, a lineage associated with the production of kabuki theatre imagery and portraits of women. The composition features a seated woman cradling a small cat, while a second figure stands beside her, holding a thin cord. The figures are rendered with the characteristic elongated proportions and fluid, calligraphic lines typical of mid-eighteenth-century Japanese prints.
The print employs a limited colour palette, relying on soft tones that have mellowed over time. The clothing of the figures displays detailed patterns, including floral motifs and geometric checks, which demonstrate the technical skill involved in woodblock carving and registration. The seated woman wears a kimono adorned with maple leaves and circular designs, while the standing figure is dressed in a plaid-patterned garment. The background remains plain, focusing the viewer's attention entirely on the interaction between the two women and the animal.
Torii Kiyohiro was active during the mid-Edo period, a time when the Ukiyo-e genre was shifting from monochrome ink prints to the early stages of colour printing. This work reflects the aesthetic priorities of the era, where the grace of the human form and the decorative quality of textiles were primary concerns. The print captures a quiet, intimate moment, far removed from the dramatic intensity often found in theatrical prints of the same period. It serves as an example of the refined style developed by the Torii school, which maintained a consistent approach to figure drawing and composition throughout the eighteenth century. The print is a representative piece of the Bijin-ga style, focusing on the beauty and fashion of women in the urban centres of Japan.
