A precise 1841 oil painting by Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, featuring a woman viewed from behind with her reflection visible in an oval mirror.
Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, often described as the father of Danish painting, produced this work in 1841. It is a characteristic example of his rigorous approach to observation and perspective. The composition features a female figure viewed from behind, her form reflected in an oval mirror mounted on a plain wall. This dual perspective allows the viewer to observe both the physical structure of the subject and her facial expression simultaneously. Eckersberg was a proponent of empirical study, insisting that his students at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts paint directly from nature. This painting demonstrates his precise draughtsmanship and his interest in the geometry of the human form. The lighting is controlled and even, avoiding dramatic shadows in favour of a clear, analytical clarity. The colour palette is restrained, focusing on the soft tones of the skin against the neutral grey of the wall and the warm wood of the mirror frame. Unlike the more romanticised nudes of his contemporaries, Eckersberg treats the subject with a sense of detachment. The mirror acts as a technical device, enabling a complex spatial arrangement that challenges the viewer to reconcile the two views of the same person. The drapery around the waist is rendered with simple, clean folds, contributing to the overall sense of order. This work remains a study in the application of perspective and the objective representation of the human figure within a domestic setting. It reflects the artist's dedication to clarity, proportion, and the study of light, which defined his contribution to the Danish Golden Age.
