An etching by Edgar Degas, this work depicts a woman stepping out of the bath, capturing an intimate and informal moment through fine lines and asymmetrical composition.
Edgar Degas (1834-1917) was a French artist celebrated for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is particularly identified with the Impressionist movement, although his approach was distinct from many of its core tenets. Degas often depicted modern life, with a focus on scenes of dancers, racecourses, and women in domestic settings. His work is characterised by its psychological insight, innovative composition, and exploration of movement. He was a master of drawing and valued line over colour, often employing unconventional viewpoints and cropping techniques. This etching shows a woman stepping out of a bath, being handed a towel by another woman. The scene is intimate and informal, capturing a private moment. Degas uses a network of fine lines to create form and shadow, giving the work a sense of immediacy. The composition is asymmetrical, with the figures placed off-centre, adding to the candid feel. The etching technique allows for a range of tonal values, from the light areas of the towel to the darker areas of the background, creating depth and texture.
