A striking portrait by Kazimir Malevich, featuring a human form reduced to flat, geometric planes of primary and secondary colours.
Kazimir Malevich, a central figure in the development of abstract art, produced this work during his later period. By this stage in his career, Malevich had moved beyond the pure geometric abstraction of his earlier Suprematist experiments. He began to reintroduce figurative elements, though these figures remain heavily stylised and reduced to essential forms.
In this composition, the human form is broken down into a series of flat, coloured planes. The figure is divided vertically, with one side rendered in a stark, pale white that merges into the background. The other side is constructed from bold, solid blocks of primary and secondary colours, including black, red, blue, orange, and green. The facial features are minimal, consisting of a single eye and a mouth, which serve as the only indicators of the subject's humanity.
The painting reflects the artist's interest in the relationship between the object and the void. The figure does not occupy a traditional three-dimensional space. Instead, it exists as a collection of signs and shapes on a two-dimensional surface. The texture of the canvas is visible beneath the paint, adding a tactile quality to the otherwise smooth, graphic application of colour.
This work demonstrates the transition in Malevich's practice as he sought to reconcile his earlier radical abstraction with a return to the human subject. The result is a portrait that avoids psychological depth in favour of a formal, structural investigation. It is a clear example of how the artist applied the logic of his non-objective art to the representation of the body, creating a figure that is both recognisable and entirely constructed from abstract components. The stark contrast between the white expanse and the saturated blocks of colour creates a sense of balance, typical of his mature style.
