A lithograph from the 1896 Elles series, capturing a quiet, domestic moment with characteristic graphic lines and a muted colour palette.
This lithograph is part of the Elles series, a collection of ten prints produced by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in 1896. The series focuses on the daily lives of women in Parisian brothels, capturing moments of solitude and routine rather than the sensationalised imagery often associated with the subject. In this composition, a woman is depicted in a private, domestic act, pouring water into a basin. The artist employs a flattened perspective and bold, graphic outlines, techniques influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft ochres, muted reds, and deep charcoal tones to define the space. The woman's posture, bent over the tub, creates a sense of quiet concentration. Her dark dress contrasts with the lighter surroundings, drawing the viewer's eye to the simple, repetitive motion of her task. Toulouse-Lautrec avoids moralising or romanticising the scene. Instead, he presents a candid observation of a private moment. The background features subtle details, such as a fireplace and decorative wallpaper, which ground the figure in a specific, albeit sparse, interior environment.
Technically, the work demonstrates the artist's mastery of the lithographic medium. He uses the grain of the stone to create texture, particularly in the floor and the woman's clothing. The lines are fluid and expressive, conveying movement and weight with minimal detail. This print offers a glimpse into the artist's ability to find aesthetic value in the mundane aspects of life. It remains a significant example of late nineteenth-century printmaking, reflecting the shift towards more personal and observational subject matter in European art.
