A striking example of Francis Picabia's later figurative work, featuring two women and a bulldog in a polished, cinematic style.
This work belongs to the period of Francis Picabia known as his 'transparency' or 'kitsch' phase, which spanned the late 1930s through the early 1940s. During these years, Picabia moved away from his earlier Dadaist experiments and abstraction, choosing instead to engage with imagery derived from popular magazines, cinema, and commercial photography. The composition presents two figures in a domestic setting, accompanied by a bulldog. The treatment of the subjects is smooth and polished, reflecting the aesthetic of mass-market illustrations of the era.
Picabia often utilised source material from magazines such as 'Cinémonde' or 'Vu', reinterpreting these photographs through his own lens. The figures are rendered with a deliberate lack of psychological depth, which was a common trait in his work from this period. The window in the background, showing a wintry scene, provides a stark contrast to the interior warmth of the room. The lighting is theatrical, casting shadows that define the forms of the women and the animal. By adopting this style, Picabia questioned the boundaries between high art and low culture, a recurring theme in his career. The painting is signed in the lower left corner, a characteristic feature of his later output. This piece offers a glimpse into the artist's fascination with the artificiality of the image, as he manipulated familiar visual tropes to create something that feels both recognisable and strangely detached. The work remains a curious example of his ability to shift styles, moving from the avant-garde to a more accessible, yet enigmatic, form of representation.
