A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga, depicting women and an attendant during a coastal excursion.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga captures a scene of leisure at the coast, likely Enoshima. Kiyonaga is recognised for his tall, slender figures and his ability to integrate human subjects with their surroundings. The composition features a group of women, one seated within a palanquin, while another stands nearby. A male attendant gestures towards the water, providing a sense of movement and narrative direction to the scene.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Ukiyo-e tradition. Kiyonaga employs a balanced use of colour, with the muted tones of the garments contrasting against the green hillside in the background. The lines are clean and controlled, defining the folds of the kimonos and the facial features of the subjects with economy. The background provides a sense of place, showing a coastal settlement nestled against a wooded slope, rendered with a focus on clarity rather than atmospheric depth.
Kiyonaga was a central figure in the development of the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the depiction of beautiful women. His work often moved away from the stylised, doll-like proportions seen in earlier prints, opting instead for a more naturalistic representation of the human form. This print reflects his interest in outdoor settings, where the figures interact with the environment. The inclusion of the palanquin suggests a journey or a day trip, a common theme in the prints of the period that catered to the urban population of Edo. The work remains a clear example of the aesthetic priorities of the late eighteenth century, where the focus was on the harmony between the human figure and the natural world, presented through the medium of the multi-coloured woodblock print.
