A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunchō depicting figures enjoying cherry blossoms at Asukayama.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunchō depicts a scene of leisure at Asukayama, a location celebrated for its cherry blossoms during the Edo period. The composition features two women and a young attendant, captured in a moment of quiet observation. Shunchō, a student of Katsukawa Shunshō, became known for his depictions of elegant figures, often referred to as bijin-ga. His work frequently features elongated proportions and a sense of grace that distinguishes his style from his contemporaries.
The figures are dressed in traditional kimono, rendered with subtle colour blocks that suggest the texture and weight of the fabric. The background includes a stone monument and sparse, stylised trees, which provide context for the outdoor setting without overwhelming the primary subjects. The use of line is precise, defining the contours of the garments and the delicate features of the faces. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft pinks, muted greys, and earthy tones to evoke the atmosphere of a spring day.
Asukayama was a popular destination for outings, and such prints served as both souvenirs and artistic representations of contemporary social customs. The print reflects the conventions of the Ukiyo-e genre, where the focus is on the fleeting nature of beauty and the enjoyment of seasonal changes. The artist's signature appears in the lower right, identifying the work as a product of his studio. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the late eighteenth century, where the balance between human subjects and their environment was a primary concern for printmakers. The print demonstrates the technical skill required to align multiple woodblocks to achieve the final image, a process that defined the production of Japanese prints during this era.
