Watanabe Seitei was a master of the kachō-ga genre, which focuses on the observation of natural subjects. His training included time in the studio of Kikuchi Yōsai, where he developed a style that synthesised traditional Japanese ink-wash techniques with Western-influenced realism.

The composition demonstrates Seitei's ability to balance negative space with precise detail.
