A precise nineteenth-century engraving depicting the classical Wounded Amazon sculpture, rendered with academic attention to form and drapery.
This engraving by Adolphe Alexandre Joseph Caron depicts the Wounded Amazon, a subject derived from classical Greek sculpture. The original sculptural type, often associated with the competition between Phidias, Polykleitos, and Kresilas, represents a warrior figure in a state of repose. Caron captures the figure with precise, academic draughtsmanship, focusing on the balanced contrapposto stance and the rhythmic folds of the chiton.
The print reflects the nineteenth-century European interest in documenting classical antiquities. Through the use of fine lines and subtle tonal shading, Caron translates the three-dimensional form of marble into a two-dimensional graphic medium. The figure stands with one arm raised, her expression calm despite the implied injury, a hallmark of the stoic ideal found in ancient statuary. The composition is clean and focused, set against a neutral background that allows the viewer to examine the anatomical accuracy and the drapery techniques employed by the original sculptor.
Caron was a skilled engraver who frequently reproduced works of art for educational and archival purposes. His approach here is objective, prioritising clarity and fidelity to the source material over personal interpretation. The inclusion of the title 'AMAZONE BLESSÉE' at the base confirms the print's role as a formal record of the sculpture. This work provides a clear view of the aesthetic values of the Neoclassical period, where the study of antiquity was considered essential for artistic training. The print is an example of the technical proficiency required in the production of high-quality engravings during the mid-nineteenth century, serving as a bridge between the physical reality of the museum object and the printed page.
