A delicate Japanese woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei, depicting a quiet writing table scene with plum blossoms and calligraphy.
This woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei is a fine example of a surimono, a genre of privately commissioned prints often exchanged among members of poetry circles during the Edo period. Hokkei, a student of Katsushika Hokusai, demonstrates his technical skill through the subtle application of colour and the precise rendering of textures. The composition focuses on a writing table, an object of scholarly pursuit, illuminated by a nearby lantern.
The scene is quiet and domestic. A small table holds books and a vase containing a single feather, while a blue ceramic bowl sits on the floor nearby. To the right, a branch of plum blossom extends into the frame, providing a natural contrast to the man-made objects. The inclusion of calligraphic text, typical of surimono, integrates the visual elements with the literary interests of the original patron. The print employs a muted palette, relying on soft blues, browns, and greys to create a sense of calm.
Hokkei was known for his ability to capture the essence of everyday objects with economy and grace. This work avoids unnecessary ornamentation, allowing the viewer to appreciate the balance between the geometric forms of the furniture and the organic curves of the plum branch. The use of negative space is deliberate, guiding the eye across the composition and creating a sense of depth despite the flat application of ink. As a piece of Japanese graphic art, it reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where the appreciation of simple, functional items was elevated through artistic representation. The print remains a clear record of the cultural practices of the time, specifically the importance of calligraphy and poetry in the lives of the urban elite.
