Description
Wytham Great Wood centres on a monumental pale-barked tree, its broad branching canopy framing a shaded woodland path and the rolling Oxfordshire landscape beyond.
A wide trunk stands close to the viewer, mottled with cream, olive and charcoal bark, while heavy branches spread across the upper frame. More slender trees form a dense green screen at the right, leaving a gap towards fields and low blue hills. The earth path curves through dappled shade at the base of the wood, with a few bright cloud forms in the open sky.
Wytham Great Wood is recalled here through the scale of its mature trees and the sudden outlook beyond them. For someone who has walked its quieter margins, the winding ground and layered farmland give the scene a calm sense of being sheltered before the land opens.
