Hiroshi Yoshida
A serene woodblock print by Yoshida Hiroshi, capturing the reflection of Mount Fuji in the calm waters of Lake Yamanaka.
Yoshida Hiroshi produced this woodblock print as part of his series depicting Mount Fuji. The composition captures the mountain reflected in the still waters of Lake Yamanaka. Yoshida, a painter who transitioned to printmaking, applied his knowledge of Western oil painting techniques to the traditional Japanese woodblock process. He worked closely with carvers and printers to achieve subtle gradations of colour, known as bokashi, which are visible in the soft sky and the misty band surrounding the base of the mountain. The print demonstrates a precise balance between the physical form of the mountain and its inverted image on the water surface. The dark, silhouetted treeline provides a horizontal anchor, separating the upper atmosphere from the lower reflection. Yoshida utilised multiple blocks to build up the depth of the scene, moving from the pale, warm tones of the sky to the deeper blues and purples of the mountain slopes. The snow-capped peak remains the primary focus, rendered with clean, sharp lines that contrast with the atmospheric haze. Unlike earlier ukiyo-e prints that relied on bold outlines and flat colour fields, this work employs a more naturalistic approach to light and shadow. The artist travelled extensively, and his observations of atmospheric conditions inform the muted, realistic palette seen here. The print reflects his technical rigour, as he insisted on overseeing every stage of production to ensure the final result matched his vision. This specific view of Mount Fuji remains one of his most recognised compositions, documenting the serene quality of the Japanese countryside during the early twentieth century.
