A dramatic woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicting the legendary Yang Xiang confronting a tiger to protect his father.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicts the legendary figure Yang Xiang, a paragon of filial piety from Chinese tradition. The narrative recounts a moment where Yang Xiang confronts a tiger to protect his father. Kuniyoshi captures the tension of the encounter through dynamic composition and expressive characterisation. The tiger, rendered with muscular detail and a fierce expression, looms over the scene, while the youth gestures towards the beast in a display of desperate courage.
The print belongs to the series 'A Child’s Mirror of the Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety' (Nijūshi kō dōji kagami). Kuniyoshi, a master of the Utagawa school, was known for his ability to infuse traditional moral tales with dramatic energy. The use of colour, particularly the contrast between the muted natural tones of the background and the bold red of the youth's garment, directs the viewer's attention to the central conflict. The inclusion of text in the upper right corner provides the necessary context for the viewer, explaining the specific act of devotion being illustrated.
Technically, the print demonstrates the precision of the Edo-period woodblock process. The lines are clean and deliberate, defining the forms of the figures and the surrounding environment. The composition utilises a diagonal axis to create a sense of movement and urgency. This work reflects the broader interest in historical and legendary subjects that occupied many artists of the late Edo period. It remains a clear example of Kuniyoshi's skill in balancing narrative clarity with visual impact, ensuring the moral lesson of the story is communicated through the physical action of the figures.
