A hand-coloured engraving by John James Audubon, depicting three Yellow Cheeked Meadow Mice in their natural habitat. This print showcases Audubon's skill in combining scientific accuracy with artistic detail.
This print by John James Audubon (1785-1851) depicts three Yellow Cheeked Meadow Mice, also known as Arvicola Xanthognathus. Audubon was an American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter, notable for his extensive studies documenting all types of American birds and animals in their natural habitats. His combined interests in art and science led to one of his most ambitious projects, *The Birds of America* (1827-1839), a series of prints documenting various species of birds found in America. He also worked on *Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America*, which included depictions of mammals. In this print, three mice are set against a soft, muted background of grassy fields and distant hills. The mice are rendered with careful attention to detail, from their fur to their whiskers. The composition is simple, with the animals arranged naturally within their environment. The colour palette is dominated by earthy tones, with browns and greens creating a sense of realism and naturalism. The print combines scientific accuracy with artistic skill, reflecting Audubon's dual expertise.
