A classic example of Mark Rothko's colour field painting, featuring layered, luminous rectangles of red, orange, and cherry.
Mark Rothko, a central figure in the development of American abstract painting, created this work during his mature period. By the early 1950s, he had moved away from figurative elements to focus on the arrangement of rectangular forms within a vertical field. This composition demonstrates his method of layering thin washes of pigment to achieve a luminous quality, where colours appear to hover or vibrate against one another. The canvas is dominated by a deep, saturated cherry red that anchors the lower portion of the work. Above this, a broad band of orange occupies the upper section, while a lighter, vertical rectangular form sits slightly off-centre. The edges of these shapes are soft and blurred, a technique Rothko used to avoid hard boundaries. This approach encourages the viewer to perceive the painting as a unified field of colour rather than a collection of distinct objects. Rothko intended for his paintings to elicit a direct emotional response. He often requested that his works be hung low and in groups to create an immersive environment. The scale of the canvas is designed to occupy the viewer's peripheral vision, drawing them into the space of the colour. The interaction between the warm orange tones and the darker red hues creates a sense of internal light, suggesting depth without the use of traditional perspective. This piece is representative of his pursuit of universal human emotions through the reduction of form to its most basic components. The application of paint is varied, with some areas showing thin, translucent layers and others displaying more opaque, textured brushwork. This variation contributes to the overall sense of movement within the static composition.

Dropped out of Yale, spent a decade finding his format, returned a restaurant commission because the diners did not deserve the paintings, and filled a chapel after his death.
