A seminal work of Color Field painting by Barnett Newman, featuring a luminous yellow expanse divided by vertical zips.
Barnett Newman, a central figure in the development of American abstract art, produced Yellow Painting in 1949. This work belongs to a period where the artist moved away from the gestural brushwork associated with his contemporaries, choosing instead to explore the emotional and spatial potential of pure colour. The canvas is dominated by a singular, expansive field of yellow, interrupted only by vertical bands, which Newman termed zips.
These zips function as structural elements that define the scale of the composition. By placing these vertical lines against the broad expanse of colour, Newman creates a sense of tension and balance. The viewer is invited to engage with the work on a physical level, as the scale of the painting often occupies the peripheral vision. This approach removes the traditional figure-ground relationship, allowing the colour to exist as an object in its own right.
Newman often spoke of his desire to create art that communicated a sense of presence. In Yellow Painting, the application of pigment is consistent, avoiding the distraction of texture or painterly mark-making. The result is a surface that appears to radiate light, drawing the observer into a direct encounter with the medium. This piece represents a shift in mid-twentieth-century painting, where the focus moved from the representation of external reality to the investigation of the act of seeing itself. The work remains a primary example of the Color Field movement, demonstrating how minimal intervention can produce a powerful visual experience.
