Description
Benkei fills the moonlit bridge with his polearm as the smaller Yoshitsune faces him across the rails, moments before their legendary contest begins, while Benkei with a naginata and young Yoshitsune sharpen this particular moment.
Benkei has taken weapons from the warriors who cross his path, and the young Yoshitsune appears to be another easy challenge. Their meeting on Gojo Bridge begins with a striking imbalance: the armed monk commands the span while the smaller traveller seems almost swallowed by the night.
This contemporary interpretation uses a long, low view to hold both figures apart before the violence closes in. Black bridge timbers divide river from sky, vermilion armour breaks the indigo field, and the moon gives the encounter the atmosphere of a remembered stage. In The Bridge Encounter, Benkei with a naginata and young Yoshitsune establish the moon indigo vermilion rhythm assigned to scene 1.
